On This Day 9th July 1809 David Cox was born
David Cox (9 July 1809 – 6 December 1885), known as David Cox the Younger, David Cox II or David Cox Jr. to distinguish him from his better-known father David Cox, was an English painter in watercolour, mostly of landscapes.

His mother was Mary Ragg and he was born in the cottage at Dulwich Common.

In 1826 he resolved to become an artist himself, and in the following year removed with his parents from Hereford to London, in that year exhibiting for the first time at the Royal Academy. About 1840 he married, but still continued to be his father's helpmate, and the sharer in all his domestic anxieties or good fortune. In 1849 he was elected an associate of the Society of Painters in Water-colours.

He died at his home in Streatham Hill and was buried at West Norwood Cemetery
