On This Day 17 August 1878 Beriah Drew died

He was a wealthy solicitor from Bermondsey and son of Beriah Drew of the same name. Beriah Drew moved to Streatham in 1811 and in 1836 he became Lord of the Manor of Leigham.
The family of Beriah Drew are remembered in the area as follows- if there are others please let me know?

Fisher Close- his daughter Jane Fisher who owned Saxoncroft
Drewstead Road derived from the family name Drew.
Angles Road- Jane Fisher's middle name
Prentis Road- his wife's name Elizabeth Prentis.
Mortimer Close- his second daughter Maria Elizabeth Mortimer.
St Peter's Church in Leigham Court Road was designed by Beriah Drew's grandson
Charles House after Charles Mortimer.
Wigmore Tennis Club. Wigmore Castle the family seat of Charles Mortimer

On Beriah's death, his vast landholdings in Streatham were [eventually] divided between his two daughters - Maria (Elizabeth) (Drew) Mortimer inheriting the land to the west of Streatham High Road and Jane Angles (Drew) Fisher getting the land on the east side.
His wife and daughters were more generous with their wealth and supported a number of local charities. St. John's Church in Eardley Road was erected in his memory by the Mortimer's and his widow donated the land for the Streatham Cricket Club ground and also for the building of Sunnyhill Road School.
