Mitcham Lane was the original trackway linking Streatham with the parish of Mitcham. This fascinating guide covers the now busy lane from the Church of the English Martyrs opposite the parish church of St Leonard, to the Streatham parish boundary at historic Roe Bridge.
Consisting of several places of worship, schools and many shops, Mitcham Lane's most famous was the premises of E and A Wates who sold quality furniture in Streatham for over a hundred years.
We can thank a previous Lord Mayor of London, Thomas Roe for the bridge over the River Graveney. In 1658 he almost drowned when thrown from his horse at this spot. Roe paid for a bridge to be built for the safety of future travellers.
The guide contains this and many other local stories.
