The Tooting Commons

Originally there were three commons in Streatham parish. Streatham Common and Tooting Bec Common survived enclosure. Leigham Common was lost in the first half of the 19th century.

These commons formed under the feudal system of the  Middle Ages were integral to village life. Villagers depended on common land for pasturing their sheep and cattle, firewood collection, foraging for berries and for recreation. In the mid 19th century once the manors had lost their influence the Metropolitan Board of Works preserved the commons for the public. They are now administered by the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Wandsworth.

This guide presents a relaxing walk picking out points of interest and discussing the rich history of our green spaces.
