Yvonne Shorten, Lambeth Tour Guide and Streatham Society Trustee, explores the achievements of this extraordinary engineer
During the blistering summer of 1858, raw sewage from over two million residents flooded the River Thames. The resulting stench was so overwhelming that it drove politicians out of the Houses of Parliament. This environmental crisis famously dubbed 'the Great Stink' exposed London's archaic sanitation system and required immediate intervention. To overhaul the network and cleanse the river, London turned to the brilliant civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette.
Join Yvonne to explore the history of London's foulest stench. During this scenic riverside walk you will also discover some of the other enduring Victorian architecture built by Bazalgette.
