Tuesday 6th October, 7pm - please note earlier start time
St Leonard's Church, Tooting Bec Gardens, SW16 1HS
Join us as our speaker Dr Maud Blair, searches for her identity as a mixed race child growing up during political unrest in apartheid 1950's Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
Maud was born to an African mother and a European father during a time of widespread racial segregation. At the age of four she was sent to a boarding school for 'coloureds' run by nuns where she was taught in English and encouraged to forget her native language. Maud would only see her family for two weeks during the Christmas holidays, and yearned for the sense of belonging she once enjoyed.
Labelled as neither African or European Maud eventually travelled to England via South Africa and finally back to post-independence Zimbabwe.
Maud offers a deeply personal view of identity, colonial history, family and belonging in her memoir 'In Between'. Copies will be available to purchase.
Maud has a degree in Race and Ethnicity from the University of Warwick and a PhD in the Sociology of Education from the Open University. She has led pioneering courses in Race and Education and Gender and Education. Maud's expertise led her to work for the Department of Education and The Learning Trust in Hackney.
We encourage people to come early at 6.30pm to have refreshments before the talk which will begin at the earlier time of 7pm. There will be no break during this meeting.
