Cheltenham Festival.
Frederick Cathcart was born On This Day 17th March 1859. Lived at 11 Hillbury Road and Thrale House North Drive Streatham. He was Clerk of the course and Chairman Cheltenham Racecourses 1908-1934. He was responsible for the development of Cheltenham as the world headquarters of National Hunt racing, establishing the Cheltenham Festival as the leading National Hunt event in the racing calendar, and for instigating two of its major races - the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Champions Hurdle. In 1999, industry paper the Racing Post named him at number 11 in the list of 100 Makers of 20th Century Racing. 2ND LIEUTENANT ERNEST HAROLD ASPDEN-6TH BATTALION, THE QUEEN'S ROYAL WEST SURREY Born March 17th 1897, Ernest was the younger son of Hartley Aspden, a journalist and author. When he left the College he had offers to attend both London and Oxford Universities, but turned both of them down because of the ongoing War. He was, however, required to undergo a major aural operation before he was able to join up. Once he had recovered, Ernest was posted to a training battalion based in Scotland before taking up his commission in the West Surreys in July 1916. A month later he was in France, beginning a highly intensive period spent mostly on the front lines, including a winter spent almost entirely within sight of the village of Bapaume. On April 9th 1917 he was shot and killed whilst leading his men at the Battle of Arras. (Source Dulwich College) The Scotsman On This Day 16 March 1936

An Important election took place last week when Horace Brooks Marshall of Streatham was elected Grand Treasurer in Grand Lodge. He is well known in charitable as in business circles in London. (Photo Wayland of Streatham) Vanessa Lee (born Winnifred Ruby Moule) was an actress born in Streatham and died On This Day 15th March 1992.
Vanessa was best known for her appearances in Ivor Novello’s musicals in the immediate post-war years as well as appearing occasionally on television. During her career she had a little cosmetic surgery on her nose that enabled her to breath more easily. Her partnership with contralto Olive Gilbert in Novello’s hit shows was legendary. Her husband inherited an Irish peerage, when he became the 8th Baron Graves, but continued to act as Peter Graves. In 1949 she acted in Ivor Novello’s musical, “King’s Rhapsody”, at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, England with Ivor Novello, Zena Dare, Phyllis Dare and Olive Gilbert in the cast. (1954) She acted in Noël Coward’s musical, “After the Ball”, at the Globe Theatre in London, England with Peter Graves, Mary Ellis and Graham Payn in the cast. Robert Helpmann was the director. He was a noted watercolourist which included a painting of Streatham Common.
In his obituary (Illustrated London News, 2April 1887) he was said "to have continued the development of that style of correct landscape painting which gained much acceptance in English eyes before the more imaginative treatment came into favour. As faithful transcripts of nature, his pictures have considerable merit, and some of them are remarkable for their truthful representation of the aspects of the country at different seasons of the year. His views of British mountain and lake scenery are distinguished also by their fidelity to local conditions." Webb ©V and A George Pratt died On This Day 14th March 1890 aged 62 and is buried in the St Leonard's church yard- (picture taken 27 April 2019)
He left an estate of £34k and his probate records his address as "Northdene" Streatham Common George Pratt bought a drapery store from William Reynolds and built-up the largest store is Streatham, Pratts Department Store, which became part of the John Lewis Partnership and closed on 28th July 1990 Walter Crane died On This Day 14th March 1915
Walter Crane (15 August 1845 – 14 March 1915) was an English artist and book illustrator. The Widow of Nain ("Weep Not"), in Christchurch Streatham Designed by Walter Crane and installed in 1891 as the first window in the north aisle. The church had pioneered the use of polychromy in the early 1840s, and had attracted a good deal of attention for that at the time. This is one of two wonderfully distinctive and expressive windows in the aisle designed by Crane, both in memory of the Reverend Woodstock Raven, the first vicar of the church, from 1841-1887.
