John Thomson died On This Day 30th September 1921. A resident with his wife Isabel at "Moordowns" 51 Woodfield Avenue and Mount Ephraim Road Streatham. They are both buried at Streatham Cemetery

A photographer and travel writer, he was born on 14 June 1837 at Portland Place, Edinburgh, the third of the four children to survive infancy of William Thomson (1794–c.1870), tobacconist, and his wife, Isabella Newlands (1801–1863).

He contributed a series of illustrated articles on life in China to The Graphic in 1872–3, published privately a magnificent portfolio of carbon prints, Foochow and the River Min (1873), and more importantly a large-scale work, Illustrations of China and its People(1873–4), which was responsible for firmly establishing his reputation as a photographer, traveller, and leading authority on China.

He was decorated by the French Government for his work in Cambodia

Sir Reginald Goodwin

On This Day 29th September 1986 Sir Reginald Goodwin died in Chichester leaving an Estate of £111k.

He was born in Pendle Road Streatham. His father Thomas was a tea salesman and his mother Lydia died in 1908. He was baptised in Brixton and attended Strand School

He was Leader of the Greater London Council from 1973-77. On the moderate wing of the Labour Party, he favoured public control of utilities. A few years later another Streatham-born politician, Ken Livingston became leader of the GLC

John Phillips

This appeared in the Norwood News On This Day 28th September 1934

Death of John Phillips, aged 94, who lived at 70 Mount Nod Road and before that at 31 Kingscourt Road with his wife Augusta.
​
A mechanical engineer he patented, the first rotary bacon cutter, the first boring morticing machine, a mineral water bottler, a brawn moulder. a mica cutter and a ballot register and checker.
He also invented a device to automatically turn music sheets at the request of Sir A Mann who was at the time conducting at Crystal Palace. The audience displayed more interest in his device than the music and so stopped being used

On This Day 27 September 1871 James Hill died. He lived at "The Rookery"

James Hill a tobacco Manufacturer, his wife Jane, a daughter and 7 domestic staff. The Census records a Butler, Cook, Lady's maid, 2 housemaids, a Nurse and a footman. (Source Census 1851)

James and Robert Hill operated as Tobacco Manufactures from premises in Shoreditch. The Image below is of the Spinet brand of cigarettes which they owned

Ella Shields

Ella Shields was born On This Day 27th September 1879. Married to William Hargreaves 1906-23 and lived Christchurch Road

American born music hall performer, Shields was invited to London in 1904 to be principal girl in the pantomime Dick Whittington at the Pavilion Theatre, Mile End. She made her debut as a male impersonator in 1910, and her signature number, dressed in top hat and ragged tails, was Burlington Bertie From Bow, written by her husband William Hargreaves in 1914 as a parody of Vesta Tilley's Burlington Bertie. She is also remembered for her interpretation of Oh! It's A Lovely War, the now notorious satirical song that became a popular hit in the trenches. (National Portrait Gallery)
