Acclaimed photographer John Thomson

John Thomson died On This Day 30 September 1921. A resident with his wife Isabel at 51 Woodfield Avenue and Mount Ephraim Road Streatham. They are both buried at Streatham Cemetery

A photographer and travel writer, he was born on 14 June 1837 at Portland Place, Edinburgh, the third of the four children to survive infancy of William Thomson (1794–c.1870), tobacconist, and his wife, Isabella Newlands (1801–1863).

He contributed a series of illustrated articles on life in China to The Graphic in 1872–3, published privately a magnificent portfolio of carbon prints, Foochow and the River Min (1873), and more importantly a large-scale work, Illustrations of China and its People(1873–4), which was responsible for firmly establishing his reputation as a photographer, traveller, and leading authority on China.
He was decorated by the French Government for his work in Cambodia

Deering Wells died On This Day 29th September 1961. He was was born in Streatham, as Frederic Saul Wells. Recorded at 80 and 155 Gleneldon Road

He was an actor, known for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1960), BBC Sunday-Night Theatre (1950) and The Royalty (1957).

On This Day 28 September 1904 Ernest Howard Shepard married Florence Eleanor Chaplin at St Andrew's Streatham

Ernest Howard Shepard was an English artist and book illustrator. He is known especially for illustrations of the anthropomorphic animal and soft toy characters in The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh.

Wing Commander Stanley Taylor

Wing Commander Stanley Taylor was for born On This Day 28th September 1922, 100 years ago. Born in Twickenham, the family later lived 71 Abercain Road and Stanley attended Battersea Grammar School in Streatham.


He joined the RAF in 1941 and carried out initial training as a navigator and bomb aimer. His first raid with 106 Squadron was in December 1942 and his first tour, in Lancasters, included attacks on Berlin, Essen, Hamburg and St Nazaire.


He took part in daring operations over heavily-defended German and Italian cities between 1942 and 1945, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross with Bar and a Distinguished Flying Medal for his gallantry. His citation speaks of his 'courage, skill, efficiency and great determination' which inspired his crews in 106, 83 and 7 Squadrons.


Wg Cmdr Taylor retired in 1978 and moved to Brisbane, Australia. His medal group consists of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Second Award Bar; Distinguished Flying Medal; 1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; General Service 1962-2007.

Ella Shields

Ella Shields was born On This Day 27th September 1879. Married to William Hargreaves 1906-23 and lived Christchurch Road

American born music hall performer, Shields was invited to London in 1904 to be principal girl in the pantomime Dick Whittington at the Pavilion Theatre, Mile End. She made her debut as a male impersonator in 1910, and her signature number, dressed in top hat and ragged tails, was Burlington Bertie From Bow, written by her husband William Hargreaves in 1914 as a parody of Vesta Tilley's Burlington Bertie. She is also remembered for her interpretation of Oh! It's A Lovely War, the now notorious satirical song that became a popular hit in the trenches. (National Portrait Gallery)

Edith Mary Copley

Edith Mary Copley (1892-1993) was born On This Day 27th September 1892.

She was a servant with her sister Elizabeth Rose Copley at the "Burnage", Streatham Common.
​
The "Burnage" was occupied by the Cave-Brown-Cave family. Edith was a VAD Red Cross Auxillary Nurse and Cook during WW1.
The Copley family lived at 41 Wellfield Road in Streatham.
