Wing Commander Stanley Taylor was for born On This Day 28th September 1922, 100 years ago. Born in Twickenham, the family later lived 71 Abercain Road and Stanley attended Battersea Grammar School in Streatham.
He joined the RAF in 1941 and carried out initial training as a navigator and bomb aimer. His first raid with 106 Squadron was in December 1942 and his first tour, in Lancasters, included attacks on Berlin, Essen, Hamburg and St Nazaire.
He took part in daring operations over heavily-defended German and Italian cities between 1942 and 1945, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross with Bar and a Distinguished Flying Medal for his gallantry. His citation speaks of his 'courage, skill, efficiency and great determination' which inspired his crews in 106, 83 and 7 Squadrons.
Wg Cmdr Taylor retired in 1978 and moved to Brisbane, Australia. His medal group consists of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Second Award Bar; Distinguished Flying Medal; 1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; General Service 1962-2007.
