On This Day 12 September 1916 2nd Lieutenant Frank Atkinson Thew was killed. He lived at 48, Oakdale Road and attended Dulwich College

Born in Northumberland on November 14th 1886, Frank was the fourth child, and eldest son, of physician and surgeon Edwin Thew and his wife, Elizabeth. He joined Dulwich in 1899, by which point the family were living in Streatham, and was a pupil at the College for the next two years, before leaving in the spring of 1901 in order to take up a place at Sutton Valence School in Kent. After finishing his education he went into the city, working as a clerk for C. Tennant Sons & Co., in their offices on Mincing Lane.

In August 1914 Frank enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company and went over to the continent for the first time with the second contingent of his regiment that December. After nine months spent at the front, mostly in the Ypres sector, he returned to England in September 1915 to take up a commission in The Queen’s. He returned to the front with his new unit nine months or so later, in July 1916, and was posted near Arras. On September 12th he was shot and killed by a sniper whilst attempting to rescue a wounded fellow officer just short of the German lines, near Écurie.
