A Scottish Conservative Party politician and businessman He was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Streatham in 1918, and held the seat until his resignation in 1939 by becoming Steward of the Manor of Northstead. A novel method of teaching boys geography is employed at the Aspen House Open Air School, Streatham Hill. Here the scholars paint maps of various parts of the world on the walls of the school itself. Don McCarthey was born 19th June 1955. From the manager of Stead and Simpson in Streatham he became Chairman of House of Fraser.
Best known as executive chairman of House of Fraser between 2006 and 2014, McCarthy played a role at many high street chains over the years, including Stead & Simpson, Kurt Geiger , Shoe Studio Group, Principles and Warehouse. Having grown up in southeast London, McCarthy joined now defunct footwear chain Stead & Simpson, which also ran shops under the Ravel and Stylo banners, straight from school at 15 years old. Quickly rising through the ranks, he became manager of a Stead & Simpson store in Streatham aged just 17. In 1975, aged 20, McCarthy decided he wanted to work in central London, so joined premium footwear retailer Kurt Geiger as assistant manager of its flagship store in Bond Street. The business was then owned by the South African Spitz family, headed by David Spitz. Vanessa was best known for her appearances in Ivor Novello’s musicals in the immediate post-war years as well as appearing occasionally on television. During her career she had a little cosmetic surgery on her nose that enabled her to breath more easily. Her partnership with contralto Olive Gilbert in Novello’s hit shows was legendary. Her husband inherited an Irish peerage, when he became the 8th Baron Graves, but continued to act as Peter Graves. In 1949 she acted in Ivor Novello’s musical, “King’s Rhapsody”, at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, England with Ivor Novello, Zena Dare, Phyllis Dare and Olive Gilbert in the cast. (1954) She acted in Noël Coward’s musical, “After the Ball”, at the Globe Theatre in London, England with Peter Graves, Mary Ellis and Graham Payn in the cast. Robert Helpmann was the director. (Vanessa Lee was related to Billy Wells also a Streatham resident- the boxer who hit the gong at the start of Rank films) On This Day 17 June 1805 Captain John Dale acquired a letter of Marque and he sailed "The Streatham" to Cork bound for Madeira and Madras and Bengal
The ‘Streatham’ was a ship of the Honourable East India Company. It was launched in 1805 and made seven voyages. In 1806 she took part in General Sir David Bairds and Admiral Sir Home Riggs Popham expedition that captured the Dutch Cape Colony Picture- the 'Streatham" with the opium clipper 'Red Rover" at anchor in Hooghly River, Calcutta. Lived at 21B Shrubbery Road and attended St Leonard's School Leader of the Greater London Council (GLC) from 1981 until the council was abolished in 1986, and as Mayor of London from the creation of the office in 2000 until 2008. Lupino Lane (16 June 1892 – 10 November 1959) was an English actor and theatre manager, and a member of the famous Lupino family, which included his niece, the screenwriter/director/actress Ida Lupino who was brought up un Streatham He is best known for playing Bill Snibson in the play and film Me and My Girl, which popularised the song and dance routine "The Lambeth Walk". He directed and starred in many silent movies which best displayed his talents as an accomplished acrobat. After appearing in such classic movies as "Isn’t Life Wonderful?" (1924), "Maid In Morocco" (1925), and "The Love Parade" (1929), he went on to direct a number of British musicals in the 1930s. Lupino Lane also achieved success in the US as the star of the Broadway hit "Afgar" (1920-22). He was the subject of This Is Your Life in March 1956 when he was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at London's BBC Television Theatre. He also appeared as the castaway on Desert Island Discs in 1957. Lane died on 10 November 1959, in London, at age 67. He is buried at Streatham Park Cemetery. His wife, Violet Blythe, died 17 March 1983, aged 93. A commemorative blue plaque was erected to LupinoLane on 15 June 2014 at his former home 32 Maida Vale, Paddington, by The Music Hall Guild of Great Britain and America.
