On This Day 21 December 1933 the suffragette Dorothy Frances Fuller (Montefiori) died. Born in Streatham (1861 census) 58A Dornton Road in the Historic Parish of Streatham
In 1898, Montefiore produced a book of verse Singings Through the Dark. She also continued to be active in the suffrage movement, serving on the executive of Millicent Fawcette's National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and she joined theWonem's Social and Political Union that had been formed by Emmeline and Christobel Pankhurst . In 1897, Montefiore proposed the formation of the Women's Tax resistance Leage. In 1906, to protest lack of political representation, Montefiore refused to pay her taxes and remained barricaded in her home for six weeks. Charles Aubrey - Smith (Actor and Cricketer) scoring 59 runs n/o for the Thespians at Streatham 1902 (Colin Hutton) On This Day 20 December 1948 Eustace Miles died at home 36 Palace Road Streatham Eustace Hamilton Miles (1868–1948), sportsman, writer, and food reformer, was born on 22 September 1868 at West End House, West End, Hampstead, the younger son of William Henry Miles, bookseller and later publisher, of Simpkin, Marshall & Co., and his wife, Mary M'Connell. English amateur real tennis champion (1898–1903, 1905–6, 1909–10) and amateur champion of America at squash rackets and real tennis (1900). He was amateur world champion at rackets (1902), and also for real tennis (1898–1903, and 1905). In addition, he was four times world doubles champion at rackets (1902, 1904, 1905–6). With Benson, whose interests were in golf and figure-skating, he edited a number of sporting books (1902–5) in Hurst and Blackett's Imperial Athletic Library, and collaborated with him on The Mad Annual (1903), a humorously satirical compilation of a distinctly juvenile kind. Sir Brian Hill, was the seventh generation of his family in the building trade as chairman of Higgs & Hill, and a respected spokesman for the wider construction industry. Hill was born in Streatham in 1932 and was educated at Stowe school. He studied land economy at Cambridge University and qualified as a chartered surveyor before joining Higgs & Hill in 1957. Construction projects carried out during his 35-year tenure at Higgs and Hill included the BBC Television Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Hayward Gallery, South Bank Television Centre and the Mound Stand at Lord’s cricket ground. Lived where Bishop’s House (on the corner of Garrad's Road and Tooting Bec Gardens) is today, He was Governor General of Madras and the house the scene of a Victorian scandal when the children’s governess, Miss Page, returned early from St. Leonard’s and discovered Lady Barlow in a ‘compromising position’ with her husband’s aide-de-camp, his cousin, Major George Pratt Barlow. They divorced in 1816. Sir George Barlow acted as Governor-General of India between 1805 and 1807. He made economy and peace his chief objects and was criticised for not continuing his predecessor Richard Colley Wellesley's policy of aggressive expansion. Gilbert Eliot was brought in to replace him and Barlow was demoted to Governor of Madras. He experienced a serious military mutiny while in the post and his reputation suffered further.
