Guardian Obituary:
Bernard Spear, who has died aged 83, was a character actor, a comedian - and a wartime disc jockey. In London's West End in the 1960s, he played Horace Vandergelder to Dora Bryan's lead in Hello, Dolly, and Sancho Panza in Man Of La Mancha with Keith Michell. From the mid-1940s to the 1980s, he made more than 300 radio broadcasts, appearing in everything from bandleader Henry Hall's Guest Night to Workers' Playtime. In the last half-century, he appeared on television some 300 times.

His films included Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's Bedazzled (1967), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Bruce Beresford's The Adventures Of Barry McKenzie (1972) and Barbra Streisand's Yentl (1983). His last film appearance was in Sally Potter's The Man Who Cried (2000). He worked for some of the most prestigious studios, here and on the continent.
