Allan Simmance was killed On This Day 18th August 1916. His name appears of the memorial at St Peter's Church, Streatham.
Allan Simmance was the son of James and Mary Simmance. The family home was in South East London and there were three sons in the family. James Simmance was a Civil Servant.
He attended Christ's Hospital School and matriculated at Jesus College, Oxford in 1913 and joined the Oxford University OTC. Less than a year later he was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th battalion King’s (Liverpool Regiment). He had two letters published in The Blue (December 1915 and February 1916) describing his journey to and life in the trenches.
He died, having been promoted Captain, at Delville Wood being shot through the heart, leading his Company in an attack that failed against the odds.
