Reverend Hubert Ashton Holdon (1822–1896), classical scholar and headmaster, was born in Birmingham on 12 May 1822, the son of Hyla Holden (1792–1849), incumbent of Erdington, Warwickshire, and his wife, Anne. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham
Attended Trinity College Cambridge. appointed vice-principal of Cheltenham College, continuing in that post until 1858. From 1858 to 1883 he was headmaster of Queen Elizabeth's School, Ipswich
He retired to Boscobel, Streatham Common, London, where he died on 30 March 1909.
