Daphne Constance Allen was born on 6th January 1899. The daughter of Hugh Allen a painter and Catherine Selina Allen, the family lived at The Oaks, Glenegale Road

Her father was the painter Hugh Allen who was a close friend of John Ruskin and in fact died after catching a chill on his way home from Ruskin's house, "Brantwood" on Lake Conniston. Her grandfather was Ruskin's publisher
