It is with great sadness that we have to let you know Daphne Marchant passed away in her sleep on Wednesday afternoon.

"Daphne was an extraordinary force in Lambeth politics, having served as a councillor in Streatham Wells for twenty years from 1994-2014. During that period she served as Mayor of Lambeth twice over, a role she took immense pride in and dedicated herself to absolutely, with her beloved husband Richard as consort.
Her work for the wider community continued through all her time on the Council and afterwards. In addition to her Council duties, she was Chair of the Norwood School governing body, a leading light in the Streatham Society, in Woodlawns (Darby and Joan) centre, the Outings for Older South Londoners, and the Myrrh Education Centre. She was proud to be awarded the BEM in 2013.
She was also an immensely committed liberal, in her words, attitudes and deeds. Though she never suffered fools gladly, she was without prejudice in identifying who the fools were. She had a keen eye for injustice and fought hard for what she believed in. In our 2014 election campaign, she was 88 but delivered three rounds of leaflets every time (and there were many, many times) up the numerous steps and steep hills of Streatham Wells Ward. When she was finished, she would ring and ask what more she could do to help."
