The son of Paula (nee Hudd) and Frederick, a radio manufacturer who later headed the BBC’s equipment department
He attended Dulwich College and married BBC What's My Line panellist and Today presenter Polly Ewes.
A British sports broadcaster and senior television executive during the formative years of the medium in the 1950s. He was the first host of the BBC's long-running Grandstand and of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.
He directed the BBC coverage of Queen Elizabeth's Coronation in 1953
