On 5th May 1975, I left the Sandy Lane ground of Tooting and Mitcham Utd after watching an evening game and headed towards the footbridge that would lead me to Grove Road and home in Streatham. As I crossed the bridge I looked into the night and saw this huge fire, flames leaping into the sky. I stood and stared and thought "that's St Leonard's". Of course I didn't know that it was St Leonard's until I heard the news the following day. I can still see those flames from the top of the footbridge 45 years later.

I was 9 years old, I remember laying in bed when I heard the constant wailing of sirens. I lived in pinfold Road at the time and remember opening the bedroom curtains and seeing a huge orange glow in the sky. On my walk to school (St leonard's primary) the next day, I remember my sense of shock and loss when I walked past and realised it was the church I used to have harvest festivals in growing up.
