He was Governor General of Madras and the house the scene of a Victorian scandal when the children’s governess, Miss Page, returned early from St. Leonard’s and discovered Lady Barlow in a ‘compromising position’ with her husband’s aide-de-camp, his cousin, Major George Pratt Barlow.
