A barrister, judge and Law Lord who lived at the Crown Lane end of Streatham Common.
Educated at Manchester Grammar and Balliol College, Oxford.
Lord Justice MacKinnon says “in the three and a half years in the King’s Bench Division, he never once reserved judgment; but what he said at the conclusion of every case, whether complicated or difficult, when taken down in shorthand was better than the laboured writings of other judges, while it scintillated with phrases that none of them could rival by the consumption of midnight oil.”
