Peter Greenham - Keeper of the Royal Academy

On This Day 11 July 1992 the artist Peter Greenham died

Peter George Greenham was born 1919 at 11 Conyers Road, Streatham

The second son of George Frederick Greenham (1874–1950), telephone engineer, and his wife, Isabel, née Duckworth (1878–1961). He was educated at Streatham, Dulwich College, Magdalen College, Oxford and the Byam Shaw School of Art in Kensington from 1936-39

A keeper at the Royal Academy he ran the Royal Academy Schools

He married a fellow painter, Irene Mary (Jane) Dowling (b. 1925)

Among the people he has painted are HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Isaiah Berlin, Professor Leonie Gombrich, Lady Bonham Carter, Dr F R Leavis and Lord Hailsham.

His portraits of 'Jane' and 'Father D'Arcy' and 'Life Class at Byam Shaw School' were bought under the terms of the Chantrey Bequest for the Tate Gallery. He is the author of book on Velasquez.
He died of prostatic cancer in Oxford on 11 July 1992, having been converted in extremis to the Roman Catholic church, and was buried at Charlton-on-Otmoor on 15 July. He was survived by his wife and two children.
