Allan James S Simmance was killed On This Day 18th August 1916 He was the son of James and Mary Simmance. His name appears on the St Peter's Church War memorial
Allan Simmance matriculated at Jesus College, Oxford in 1913 and joined the Oxford University OTC. Less than a year later he was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion King’s (Liverpool) Regiment. He had two letters published in The Blue (December 1915 and February 1916) describing his journey to and life in the trenches.
He died, having been promoted Captain, at Delville Wood being shot through the heart, leading his Company in an attack that failed against the odds.
