Richard Saumarez (1764–1835), surgeon, fifth son of Matthew Saumarez (1718–1778)and his wife, Carteret, daughter of James le Marchant, was born in St Peter Port, Guernsey, on 13 November 1764.
Richard was born into a well-known Guernsey family, and two elder brothers added to this reputation. James Saumarez became an admiral fighting under Nelson, and Thomas Saumarez was knighted after achieving the rank of general.
Entered himself as a medical student at the London Hospital about 1781.
In 1788 Saumarez was appointed surgeon to the Magdalen Hospital, Streatham, an office which he resigned on 1 March 1805. He then became an honorary governor in recognition of the services he had rendered the hospital.
He gradually developed a large and lucrative practice in London until 1818, when he retired to Bath
