Originally from Yorkshire Leaf ran a drapery and haberdashery business in central London, which was so successful that he was able to branch out into profitable involvement with railway development and insurance companies. He succeeded beyond most people’s wildest dreams and when he died in 1874 left an estate worth well over £500,000.
